AIS

AIS, or the Automatic Identification System, is a tracking system used for collision avoidance and vessel monitoring. It utilises standardised VHF communication with integrated GPS coordinates to display nearby vessels (with AIS) on a dedicated display, radar or chartplotter system. It is a required safety feature for larger vessels, however more and more smaller craft are now installing AIS to improve safety whilst at sea.
